Former Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent.

The Spanish High Court imposed a fine of $11,270 (€10,800) on former soccer president Luis Rubiales, to be paid in daily installments of $21 over 18 months. However, Rubiales was acquitted of coercion. Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of two and a half years for the 47-year-old, but the court's ruling allowed him to avoid jail time.

The judge decided against prison time, calling the assault a "sporadic act" and deeming it "always reprehensible," but of lesser severity under Spanish law, as it lacked intimidation or violence.

Rubiales was also ordered to pay $3,130 (€3,000) in compensation to soccer player Jenni Hermoso for the "moral damages" caused by the incident, which was witnessed by thousands in the stadium and millions more watching on TV. Additionally, Rubiales was banned from coming within 200 meters (approximately 656 feet) of Hermoso or communicating with her for a year.

Rubiales' three co-defendants—former members of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), including ex-women's national team coach Jorge Vilda—were also acquitted of attempting to coerce Hermoso into claiming she had consented to the kiss.

CNN has contacted Rubiales' and Hermoso's legal teams, as well as the RFEF, FIFA, and UEFA for comments.

The incident, which overshadowed Spain's first-ever Women's World Cup victory, has had a lasting impact on Hermoso. Reflecting on the trial, she said, "I knew I was being kissed by my boss, and that should not happen in any social or work environment." She further described the experience as tainting one of the happiest days of her life and expressed that, since the incident, she has felt her life has been "on standby" and has not "lived freely."

Rubiales, who resigned as RFEF president, testified on February 11 that he had asked for Hermoso's permission before the kiss, which Hermoso denied.

The incident sparked widespread protests in Spain and ignited a national debate about misogyny in both sports and broader society.
